Welcome to Saoirse's Bumblebees Team Page for the Step Up for Down Syndrome Walk!

Meet Saoirse, our spirited four-year-old who lights up every room with her sassy, bossy, and fun-loving personality. She's a social butterfly who makes friends everywhere she goes and brings joy to everyone around her. Her infectious energy and zest for life inspire us every day.

We are thrilled to be part of the Step Up for Down Syndrome Walk, showing our support for Saoirse and the more than 400,000 individuals with Down syndrome across the U.S. Each dollar we raise brings us one step closer to ensuring that Saoirse and every individual with Down syndrome will have the opportunity to reach their full potential.

Our fundraising efforts support the local programs and services of the Down Syndrome Association for Families of Nebraska. Additionally, the funds go towards advocacy and public awareness initiatives that benefit all individuals with Down syndrome in our community.

Make your tax-deductible donation today and take the first step toward helping us achieve our goal. Thank you for your support!

The boys had a pro-lacrosse clinic this morning and Saoirse couldn’t stand it, she wanted to get out there so badly. Watch her weasel her way into some pics.
The boys got to learn from @pll players Bryan Costabile of the NY Atlas and Marcus Holman of the Boston Canons—thanks guys! #lacrosse #medicinegame #creatorsgame

Down syndrome is a unique condition where a person has an extra copy of chromosome 21. Chromosomes are tiny packages of genes in our cells that guide how our bodies form and function.

This extra chromosome adds to the special way babies with Down syndrome grow, influencing their physical and mental development. Despite some challenges, individuals with Down syndrome bring #joy and #diversity to our world. It’s the most common chromosomal condition in the U.S., with about 5,700 wonderful babies born each year! #downsyndromeawareness #inclusion

Saoirse had her second sleep study last night to check for obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). During a sleep study, sensors, leads, and straps are applied to the child to measure movement, and a nasal probe and pulse oximeter are used. The study involves an overnight stay in a sleep center and records more than 1,000 pages of information with audio and video. She did awesome. #downsyndromeawareness #sleepstudy #obstructivesleepapnea

We love engaging with your questions and comments about the Down syndrome community! It’s wonderful to see so many positive responses, and some of you have noted that certain comments sometimes disappear. I want to clarify that while we welcome curiosity and open discussions, we maintain a safe space. Disrespectful comments, especially towards children, are not suitable on any platform or situation. Here are some common traits of individuals with Down syndrome:

Flattened Facial Profile: Noticeably flatter face, particularly the bridge of the nose.
Distinctive Eyes: Beautiful almond-shaped eyes that slant upwards.
Short Neck: A compact and shorter neck.
Small Ears: Smaller in size, adding to their unique charm.
Expressive Tongue: Tongue that tends to peek out, which is characteristic and endearing.
Bright Eyes: Tiny white spots on the iris, known as Brushfield spots, add to the uniqueness of their gaze.
Delicate Hands and Feet: Smaller in size with distinct features.
Palmar Crease: A single line across the palm, often referred to as a simian crease.
Curved Pinky Fingers: Small pinky fingers that may curve towards the thumb.
Muscle Tone: Generally have poor muscle tone or more flexible joints.
Stature: Often shorter in height both in childhood and adulthood.
We celebrate the beauty in our differences, as every child is wonderfully unique and special. Let’s continue to build a community that celebrates diversity and fosters understanding 💛💙 #downsyndromeawareness #inclusionmatters

Saoirse is already a determined young lady, but having these two helping her every step of the way is going to make her unstoppable. #downsyndromeawareness #siblings #brotherlylove
“While having a sibling with Down syndrome may present unique challenges, it also provides many opportunities for children’s positive growth and character development. Studies have shown that children who have a brother or sister with Down syndrome can benefit in many ways. For example, these children often exhibit a level of maturity above that of their peers and tend to have more highly-developed communication and social skills. The experience and knowledge gained by having a sibling with Down syndrome also seems to make children more accepting and appreciative of differences. They tend to be more aware of the difficulties others might be going through, and often surprise parents and others with their wisdom, insight, and empathy.”
