7th Annual Chattanooga Autism Awareness Walk

When: November 9, 2019

Where: Coolidge Park, 150 River Street, Chattanooga, TN

Parking: We recommend arriving early so you have time to find parking. Try the Republic Lot off of Tremont Street across from the Theatre Centre, but this lot will fill up. Many people find parking on North Shore streets and walk down. 

Things to pack: Bring gloves and hats and layers. You can always remove if you get warm later. Also, consider bringing chairs and a blanket to set up a home base for your family and friends in the grass.

Things to win: There is an award for the school with the biggest team and the most cheerful and informative exhibitor. There are also 1st, 2nd, and 3rd prizes for the following cateogies:

  • teams with best costumes
  • teams with best spirit 
  • organizations with the largest teams
  • families with the largest teams
  • organization teams that raise the most money
  • family teams that raises the most money
  • individuals who raise the most money

BEFORE WALK

Online Registration: Ends Wednesday night at midnight so we can organize shirts Thursday. People can still donate to your pages online all week and even after the walk. And, people can register at the walk if they missed online. 

Early Shirt Pick-Up: This is optional. Friday from 10am to 4pm registered people can come pick up their shirts at the CAC. Teams can send their captain or representative and pick the whole batch up at once. Go to the CAC, 1400 McCallie Avenue, Suite 114.

Event Schedule: 

9am - Check-in is open at pavilion. If you're on a team, send your team leader to pick up your bags of shirts. If you're not on a team, your shirts will also be available at check-in.

Things to do:

  • visit 40+ exhibitors 
  • kids activities area
  • set up chairs in the grass and hang out
  • talk to other parents and families
  • see all the people in costumes
  • and more!

10:30 - Announce winners of biggest family teams, biggest organization team, biggest fundraisers (teams and individuals, familes and business), biggest school team. 

10:40 - walkers line up, warm up, announcments, walk instructions

11:00 - Walk starts. 2 miles across Walnut Street bridge. Most are back in less than an hour.

No post walk announcements. People are free to hang out and picnic or head home. 

Weather: We will walk rain or shine. If there is lightning or severe rain, the event will be cancelled. There isn't a rain date unfortunately. 

WALK UPDATE (11/5)

We’re so excited about the 7th Annual Chattanooga Autism Awareness Walk coming up on Saturday! Thank you all for your support, and thank you to our WONDERFUL SPONSORS. Because of all of you, we met our goal of $60,000 early this year, and already have over 850 people registered! Here are some things you need to know about the event. DAY OF WALK

What to Wear: It's supposed to be sunny but cold, so dress warmly and wear layers!

When to Arrive: Check-in, kids activities, vendors, music, and more are all set up at 9am. Attendees arrive anytime from 9-10:30 though. Try to give yourself time to check-in and see exhibitors and let kids adjust.

What to Do: Have some free coffee from Stone Cup Cafe. Get some pictures at the Chattanooga Photo Booth Company’s table inside the pavilion. Listen to the Crescent Club Quartet. Let your kids play at the kids activities area. Take pictures with superheroes, Star Wars characters, and other costumed attendees. The exhibitors will have great information and some might have some give-aways.You can also bring chairs and/or blankets and set them in the grass as a home base. You can people watch, enjoy the park, or decide to connect with other families and see what brings them to this event. Enjoy this celebration and know that you're surrounded by people who support the autism community!

Awards: We're giving out awards for the top fundraising individuals and teams, biggest teams, team spirit, and team costumes (so feel free to dress up if you want!). 

Route: Click here to see a map and directions. We'll start at the stage in Coolidge Park and eventually cross the Walnut Street Bridge. We'll do a loop on the other side and then back the way we came. 

Walk Etiquette: Walk at your own pace. We'll have lead walkers who show the way and no one can pass them. Those who like to walk fast should go to the front and the rest can line up in middle and end. We'll have walkers at the end of the line that make sure no one is left behind. Strollers are welcome!

After Walk: There's no closing ceremony and vendors will pack up after 11. Many families like to head out right after they walk, but you’re also welcome to stay and enjoy the park.
